Jamaican Churches Urged to Consider Armed Security Measures

In the wake of a fatal shooting at a church service in Montego Bay, Protestant churches in Jamaica are being urged to consider employing armed security personnel to protect congregants. Reverend Newton Dixon, the General Secretary of the Jamaica Council of Churches, made this call following the tragic incident where 38-year-old businesswoman Cora Thompson was shot and killed at the church’s entrance during a service.

Addressing the rising tide of violence affecting places of worship, Reverend Dixon emphasized the necessity of considering drastic security measures. He noted the urgency of such actions to ensure the safety and well-being of church attendees, given the current climate of rising crime. According to Reverend Dixon, churches ideally should not require security forces, but current circumstances demand it due to the lack of respect for both life and sacred spaces shown by criminals.

The call to action follows a disturbing trend of violence encroaching on previously considered ‘safe’ sacred spaces. Reverend Dixon acknowledged that not all churches might afford such security measures, but he highlighted the importance of safety for congregants as a top priority. “When there is no longer respect for life and God, churches must turn to avenues they might not traditionally have considered,” Reverend Dixon stated.

Apart from the immediate security concerns, Reverend Dixon’s comments also reflect broader national and regional issues of crime affecting Jamaica. The tragedy at Montego Bay, an area already noted for high crime rates, brings attention to the challenges faced by various communities seeking peace and security. By voicing these concerns, Reverend Dixon hopes to stimulate both awareness and action amongst church leaders and the broader community.

This recommendation by the Jamaica Council of Churches highlights the broader security challenges faced by religious institutions under the increasing pressure of violent crimes. It marks a significant shift in how churches may need to operate, intersecting faith with pragmatic security solutions to cope with societal challenges. The call aligns with a growing narrative of the need for enhanced security measures applicable beyond religious settings, permeating Jamaican society at large.
