Israeli forces carried out a series of strikes on Thursday that targeted the Nabatieh al‑Fawqa district, the town of al‑Mansouri, and the area between Zebqine and Shihine in southern Lebanon.
During the overnight hours leading into Thursday, artillery fired on Zawtar al‑Sharqiyeh, Wadi al‑Hujair, Nabatieh al‑Fawqa and Wadi Slouqi. Israeli troops also detonated houses and infrastructure in al‑Mansouri, Mays al‑Jabal, Bani Hayyan and al‑Khiam.
An Israeli strike on Wednesday killed one person in southern Lebanon, according to Lebanese authorities. Since the Israeli army captured the Ali al‑Taher ridge—a strategic Hezbollah position in Nabatieh last week—attacks in the area have intensified.
Lebanese officials report that the recent attacks have killed at least 29 people since Friday, including 12 members of a single family. The Lebanese army said the escalation threatens the framework agreement reached in June and hampers its efforts to establish stability in the region.
Fighting in Lebanon had largely calmed after a U.S.–Iran memorandum of understanding and a framework agreement between Israel and Lebanon were signed in June. However, Beirut continues to report recurring Israeli strikes, claiming that more than 4,300 people have been killed in the south since March and that Israeli forces maintain a so‑called “security zone” in the area.
On Tuesday, United Nations Secretary‑General António Guterres expressed concern about the “escalation” in southern Lebanon, according to a UN spokesperson.
In an online petition circulated this week, nearly 400 Lebanese public figures—including legal experts and human rights advocates—called for the deployment of the Lebanese army in Nabatieh. The petitioners also warned of a possible expansion of the Israeli occupation toward the city, which lies about 11 kilometres from the Israeli border. “This city does not belong to any political group,” the signatories wrote, referring to Hezbollah’s presence in Nabatieh.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the Lebanese army said its units were “deployed in all areas that Israel does not occupy, particularly in the Nabatieh region.”
