An Israeli airstrike killed at least eight Palestinians and wounded 20 others attending a funeral in Nuseirat in the central Gaza Strip on Friday, according to Gaza health officials. The funeral was for a person killed by another Israeli strike on the area earlier in the day.
Hamas condemned the strike as a ‘brutal massacre’ against mourners and urged mediators, as well as the United Nations, to act to halt Israeli attacks in Gaza. The Israeli military said it struck a cell belonging to the Islamic Jihad militant group and was ‘aware of the claims that several uninvolved individuals were harmed’.
These deaths, along with at least three Palestinians killed in separate Israeli strikes elsewhere, brought Friday’s toll to at least 12. The strike is the latest violation of a ceasefire that took effect in October, which halted major fighting but has not stopped near-daily Israeli attacks.
