The People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C), led by Dr Irfaan Ali, emerged victorious in the recent presidential elections in Guyana, according to preliminary figures. The party not only secured the presidency for Ali’s second term but also won the majority of elected parliamentary seats, claiming 34 out of 65. The elections held on September 1, saw participation from six parties but the primary competition was among PPP/C, People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) led by Aubrey Norton, and the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) Party led by billionaire Azruddin Mohamed. Over 750,000 voters cast their votes at more than 2,800 polling stations across the country.
