Ireland South MEP leads EU ban on AI nudifier tools

An Ireland South MEP is spearheading new legislation in the European Parliament to ban artificial intelligence ‘nudifier’ tools used to create sexually explicit images of real people without their consent.

Independent MEP Michael McNamara first proposed the ban in March, arguing that existing laws are insufficient to address the growing threat of AI-generated non-consensual intimate imagery. The tools, often available online, can strip clothing from photos or manipulate images to create explicit content.

McNamara’s initiative aims to close legal loopholes and establish a clear prohibition across EU member states. The proposed legislation targets both the development and distribution of such tools, holding creators and platforms accountable.

The ban has garnered cross-party support in the European Parliament, reflecting mounting concerns over digital privacy and the misuse of AI. If passed, the EU would be among the first jurisdictions to enact a comprehensive ban on nudifier technology.

Campaigners against image-based abuse have welcomed the move, calling it a crucial step in protecting victims. McNamara said the ban sends a strong message that non-consensual intimate image generation will not be tolerated.
