Ireland raises e-scooter legal age to 18, makes helmets and high-vis compulsory

This report covers ireland raises e-scooter legal with key details and context.

DUBLIN, Ireland – The Government has decided not to introduce a complete ban on e-scooters, but it will raise the minimum age for using them to 18, making helmets and high-visibility jackets compulsory from August.

The Taoiseach, Tánaiste and other senior ministers agreed to stricter rules after a sharp rise in injuries. E-scooters will be classified as mechanically powered vehicles later this year, requiring users to have a license and register their scooters.

Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly reported that 1,412 e-scooters have been seized so far this year, with 793 prosecutions. He noted a surge in Garda operations related to e-scooters.

Early data from Children’s Health Ireland (CHI) and the HSE shows a worrying trend: more than one-third of all children admitted to CHI at Temple Street with traumatic brain injuries were injured in e-scooter incidents, a 50% increase over the past year. CHI estimates one to two children arrive each day at emergency departments with e-scooter-related injuries this summer.
