Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has expressed deep concern over the tragic death of six-year-old Jasher Francois, stating that a third autopsy may be necessary to fully understand the circumstances surrounding his passing. Speaking at a Caroni lease distribution ceremony, she described the situation as heart-wrenching, emphasizing her emotional connection as a mother and grandmother.
In response to the incident, Persad-Bissessar has initiated the establishment of an independent investigative team, which has already begun its work. Following the completion of two post-mortem examinations, the Prime Minister indicated that further analysis might be required to reconcile the findings of both reports.
She stated, “I don’t want to pronounce on it until that investigation is complete,” highlighting the importance of thoroughness in uncovering the truth. The child had died at the San Fernando Teaching Hospital after being treated for a dry cough. Initial autopsy findings suggested aspiration pneumonitis as the cause of death, potentially triggered by viral pneumonia. A subsequent autopsy further detailed various complications, including brain swelling and kidney injury.
A four-member expert team, commissioned by Health Minister Dr. Lackram Bodoe, is expected to finalize their investigation by August 20. As the inquiry unfolds, it remains unclear if any medical personnel involved in Jasher’s treatment have been placed on leave. The Prime Minister has yet to speak with the child’s family or confirm her attendance at the funeral, indicating she will make that decision closer to the date.
