International:
Reports suggest the FDA is weighing whether to add a “black box” warning—its most serious safety label—to Covid-19 vaccines. Such a warning, used for medications with potentially life-threatening risks, would place the vaccines in the same category as drugs like opioids and Accutane.
The idea, reportedly supported by Dr. Vinay Prasad and some former Trump administration health officials, has generated significant pushback. Many experts argue there is no scientific justification for issuing such a label, and it’s still unknown whether it would apply to all Covid-19 vaccines or only the mRNA versions.
At the same time, the FDA is reviewing claims about possible vaccine-related deaths across different age groups, including an allegation involving 10 children. According to Prasad, the agency is also planning to tighten approval standards for future vaccines—Covid-19, flu, and others—to ensure stronger evidence of safety and effectiveness.
Despite the debate, Covid-19 vaccines have prevented millions of deaths globally and remain highly effective at reducing severe illness, including in children. More than 700 million doses have been given in the U.S., with serious adverse reactions—such as myocarditis or anaphylaxis—remaining rare.
Both Moderna and Pfizer continue to affirm that their vaccines undergo extensive safety monitoring and remain safe for children and pregnant individuals.
