In a recent high court ruling, inmates Paul Williams and Mark Marshall were awarded over $90,000 in compensation for an assault incident at Golden Grove State Prison during a riot in March 2020. The judgement was made against the Office of the Attorney General, confirming the unlawful actions of the prison officers involved. Williams and Marshall suffered from baton blows and delayed medical care, with Marshall additionally enduring a fractured nose and dislocated hand. The damages were broken down into $30,000 for Williams, $20,000 for Marshall, and an additional $10,000 each in exemplary damages. The state has also been ordered to cover their legal costs. The judge underscored the prison officers’ failure in upholding safe and humane conditions and their neglect of immediate medical treatment for the victims.
