India, Vietnam reaffirm commitment to further strengthen partnership as PM Modi meets counterpart on BRICS sidelines

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with the Prime Minister of Vietnam, Le Minh Hung, on September 12 in New Delhi to discuss the progress of bilateral relations. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Summit, which is being hosted by India under its 2026 chairmanship.

According to a press release from India’s Ministry of External Affairs, Prime Minister Modi welcomed Vietnam’s participation in the summit as a partner country. The two leaders reviewed the status of their bilateral ties, which were elevated to an Enhanced Comprehensive Strategic Partnership during the state visit of Vietnamese President To Lam to India in May.

During the discussions, the leaders exchanged views on regional and global issues and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the partnership between the two nations. The Ministry of External Affairs noted that Vietnam remains a key pillar of India’s Act East Policy and serves as an important partner in India’s engagement with Southeast Asia.

The 18th BRICS Summit, held from September 12 to 13, is centered on the theme of building for resilience, innovation, cooperation, and sustainability. As a partner country, Vietnam intends to use the summit to deepen its relations with India and other BRICS members. Prime Minister Le Minh Hung is expected to present Vietnam’s perspectives on international cooperation, economic growth, and sustainable development.

The BRICS grouping currently includes 11 member nations: Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates. In addition to Vietnam, the list of partner countries includes Nigeria, Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan.
