Journalists from Nigeria and Indonesia have expressed positive views regarding India’s leadership of the 18th BRICS Summit, which is being held in New Delhi on September 12 and 13, 2026.
Idehai Frederick, Chairman of the Diplomatic Correspondents Association of Nigeria (DICAN), stated that India possesses the vision and capacity to help harmonize the global economy through the BRICS platform. Speaking on the sidelines of the summit, Frederick emphasized the potential for increased cooperation between India and Nigeria, noting that both nations serve as significant economies and democracies within their respective continents. He highlighted that Indian companies are among the largest private employers in Nigeria and described the trade relationship between the two countries as constructive.
Frederick advocated for a focus on collaboration rather than competition among BRICS members to strengthen the global economy. He noted that the grouping has shown consistent improvement over its two-decade history and expressed support for the consensus-based approach currently being promoted.
Mega Mei Wahidawati, a freelance journalist from Indonesia, also commented on the event, noting that it was particularly significant as Indonesia is participating as a member of the grouping for the first time.
The 18th BRICS Summit is being held under India’s 2026 chairmanship, which is guided by the theme, “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.” The summit focuses on areas including development, finance, technology, trade, and people-to-people exchanges.
According to information provided regarding India’s chairmanship, the BRICS grouping currently accounts for approximately 49.5 percent of the global population, 40 percent of global GDP, and 26 percent of global trade. The organization now comprises 11 member countries—Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and the UAE—along with 10 partner countries.
