Independence Day Parade Cancelled, Government to Save $2.6M

In a surprising move, the government has cancelled this year’s Independence Day parade and fireworks display, expected to save at least $2.6 million. The funding for these events had already been approved by the former PNM administration. The parade alone was estimated to cost $1.5 million, including Grand Stand rentals, usher hiring, media tower construction, audio system installation, guest refreshments and transportation. In place of festivities, a National Day of Prayer and Reflection will be observed. Legal Affairs Minister Saddam Hosein defended the decision, citing security concerns and stating the saved funds would be redirected to crime-fighting initiatives. The fireworks display was expected to cost around $1.1 million, a figure disputed by the former administration who claimed the fireworks were donated by private entities. Despite this, a government source confirmed that several state entities, including UDeCOTT, contribute to the event’s financing.
