Diego Martin North/East MP Colm Imbert has questioned what he described as wide variations in the number of electors assigned to districts under the Government’s proposed municipal boundary changes.
Presenting figures during an Opposition press conference, Imbert said some proposed electoral districts would contain roughly 4,000 electors while others would have more than 8,000 or 9,000.
He cited the proposed new Couva Corporation as having approximately 57,000 electors, averaging about 9,500 per district, while Port of Spain would have approximately 50,000 electors with about 4,000 per district.
He also referenced proposed voter numbers for St Augustine, Siparia, Tunapuna, Arima, San Fernando and other corporations.
Imbert argued that the differences raised questions about the rationale used to design the new municipal structure.
He linked those disparities to the PNM’s broader allegation that the changes were driven primarily by electoral considerations rather than administrative efficiency.
The figures and interpretation were presented by Imbert during the Opposition’s criticism of the Municipal Corporations Amendment Bill.
