Hurricane Erin Intensifies, Threatens Puerto Rico and Virgin Islands

Hurricane Erin, recently intensified to a Category 3 storm, is unleashing heavy rain, powerful winds, and treacherous surf on the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. Tracking west-northwest, a turn to the north is anticipated early this week. The storm’s center is located about 155 miles north of San Juan, Puerto Rico, and 310 miles east of Grand Turk Island, with maximum winds of 125 mph. The outer rainbands have already caused gusty winds and significant rainfall in the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. Forecasters project the hurricane’s core to pass east of the Turks and Caicos Islands and the southeastern Bahamas. The hurricane’s forceful winds extend up to 25 miles from the center, and tropical storm force winds reach 205 miles. Expected rainfall totals of 3–6 inches could lead to flash flooding and landslides.
