Hunting Season Opens Across Trinidad And Tobago Until February 2027

The 2026–2027 hunting season is officially open across Trinidad and Tobago, giving licensed hunters the green light to pursue designated game species under the country’s wildlife regulations. The season began on October 1, 2026 and will continue until February 28, 2027. The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries said State Game Licences went on sale from September 21, with each licence costing TT$100 per game species. Hunters are permitted to purchase a maximum of three State Game Licences. The licences allow holders to hunt the species specified on their permits on State Lands and within Forest Reserves, subject to the Conservation of Wild Life Act. Hunters are being reminded that different restrictions apply to some species. Hunting and possession of iguana will become prohibited from January through March, meaning the legal hunting period for iguana ends at midnight on December 31, 2026. Anyone caught hunting or possessing iguana during the prohibited period can face a TT$10,000 fine. The hunting of lizards is also prohibited within the municipal boundaries of the City of Port of Spain. First-time hunters applying for a State Game Licence must provide valid government-issued identification, such as a national identification card, driver’s permit or passport. A recent utility bill, no more than three months old, is also required to verify their address. Licences are available through designated Forestry Division and revenue offices in Trinidad and Tobago, generally between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. from Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays. Hunters must also correctly complete and return their Mandatory Data Return Forms by May 31, 2027. Failure to submit the required form can result in a TT$2,500 fine per form. Although hunting ends on February 28, hunters generally have until March 31, 2027 to dispose of legally obtained game carcasses or parts remaining in their possession. Iguana is the exception, with disposal required by December 31, 2026. Authorities are urging hunters to familiarise themselves with the country’s wildlife laws and ensure all hunting activities are carried out legally and responsibly.
