Parents using YouTube Kids on an Android phone or tablet can set a custom four-digit passcode to control access to the app’s parental controls and settings, according to Google’s help guidance.
Setting up the code involves completing a multiplication problem, entering a four-digit passcode and confirming it when prompted. The custom code then provides a way to access the controls without relying solely on the multiplication question.
Google also provides options to change or delete an existing passcode. Its instructions say users can complete the multiplication problem or enter their custom passcode before choosing to set a new code or remove the existing one.
For anyone who forgets their code, Google identifies uninstalling and reinstalling the YouTube Kids app as a way to reset it. That comes with a consequence worth checking before proceeding: uninstalling the app removes existing recommended videos, according to the guidance.
The passcode instructions concern access to parental controls and settings. Google lists other YouTube Kids controls separately, including options for blocking and sharing content, managing profiles, setting content levels through Family Link and limiting screen time. Families looking to adjust those features will need the corresponding help guidance in addition to the passcode instructions.
