Holguin cancels Cyprus visit due to illness

**UN envoy Maria Angela Holguin cancels Cyprus visit due to health concerns**

Maria Angela Holguin, the UN Secretary-General’s personal envoy for Cyprus, has cancelled her upcoming visit to the island, which was scheduled for September 10, due to health reasons.

According to reports on Saturday, Holguin was advised by her medical team to refrain from air travel. The visit had previously been postponed due to illness before being rescheduled for September 10. Had the trip proceeded, it would have marked her first visit to Cyprus since UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ visit in late July.

Sources indicated that Holguin is now expected to pursue meetings with President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman on the sidelines of the upcoming UN General Assembly in New York.

**Progress on Cyprus problem negotiations**

Despite the cancellation, President Nikos Christodoulides expressed optimism on Saturday regarding the development of a document outlining existing convergences on the Cyprus problem. He stated that such a document could serve as a foundation for an expanded conference and the resumption of formal negotiations.

Christodoulides noted that the document would need to be presented to both sides and the guarantor powers. “We hope that this document will be ready,” he said, adding that it could provide “a very good way for the talks to resume.”

The President emphasized that once an agreement on convergences is reached, the negotiating acquis should be preserved. He suggested that an expanded conference could then be convened to announce the resumption of negotiations, focusing on the remaining points of divergence.

Christodoulides remains hopeful for progress in the interim, noting that he is scheduled to meet with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman again in the coming week.
