Norges Gymnastikk- og Turnforbund (NGTF) reported that Norwegian gymnast Tobias Sponevik became the first athlete from Norway to win a medal at a World Artistic Gymnastics Championships. Sponevik surprised himself when he advanced to the vault final last weekend, having finished seventh among the eight gymnasts who qualified. In the final he earned 14.366 points. The gold medal went to Artur Davtyan of Armenia with a score of 14.85, while British gymnast Jake Jarman took silver with 14.65. The vault event requires the gymnast to sprint to a springboard and vault over the pommel horse. Judges award points for the difficulty of the routine, the execution of flips and twists, and the quality of body position. No Norwegian gymnast has previously reached an apparatus final at a World Championships, making Sponevik’s qualification a historic achievement for Norway.
