High Tides Contribute to Increase in Biting Mosquitoes in Grand Cayman
The Mosquito Research and Control Unit (MRCU) has initiated extensive mosquito control operations in Grand Cayman due to higher-than-acceptable biting mosquito numbers in several areas. According to surveillance data, there has been a significant increase in mosquito populations.
Preliminary figures for 2026 indicate a year-to-date average of approximately 40 mosquitoes. The MRCU has attributed the rise in biting mosquito numbers to high tides. As a result, the unit is working to mitigate the issue through control operations.
The MRCU is using fogger trucks as part of their efforts to reduce the mosquito population. The exact locations and details of the operations have not been specified, but the MRCU is taking measures to address the increased mosquito activity in the affected areas of Grand Cayman.
