President Irfaan Ali of Guyana recently announced that all Guyanese citizens above 18 years will be granted a GY$100,000 cash grant. This announcement was made as a part of the government’s 2026 budget proposals, which are due to be presented next month. Ali’s administration plans to invest in education, healthcare, infrastructure, and social services in the next five years. This cash grant had been expected since the campaign period of Guyana’s recent General and Regional elections. Guyana’s booming oil revenues have changed public expectations regarding direct financial benefits. The country began offshore crude production in late 2019 and has seen unprecedented economic growth since. However, the government has clarified that these cash grants won’t be the main use of oil revenues. The primary focus would be on long-term infrastructure and development projects.
