Guyana: Younger Patients Showing Signs of Heart Disease, Doctors Warn

Doctors in Guyana have raised concerns regarding the increasing prevalence of heart disease among younger patients. This issue was highlighted during the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation’s Cardiac Symposium 2026, which took place at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre. The theme of the symposium was “Healthy Hearts, Healthy Guyana: Advancing Prevention of Heart Disease.” Dr. Navindranauth Rambarran, the Director of Medical and Professional Services at GPHC, addressed over 300 health professionals, stating that heart disease is one of the leading causes of death in the country, with more than 2,000 fatalities each year. He noted that a significant portion of these deaths is attributed to coronary artery disease.

Dr. Rambarran expressed concern over the rising number of younger individuals presenting with conditions typically associated with older age, such as hypertension, obesity, diabetes, arrhythmias, and premature coronary artery disease. This trend is particularly alarming as many affected individuals are in their most productive years, which poses challenges not only for the healthcare system but also for families and the economy.

Dr. Michael Chin, Head of Cardiology and Medical Services at GPHC, emphasized that Guyana faces a substantial burden of heart disease due to prevalent risk factors including diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, smoking, and a family history of coronary artery disease. He pointed out that many patients often present with advanced coronary artery disease by the time they experience symptoms such as chest pain or heart attacks.

Dr. Chin advocated for a shift in focus towards early detection of risk factors and emphasized the importance of early screening and management, particularly for younger individuals. He mentioned diagnostic tools like coronary calcium score testing and lipoprotein(a) testing, which can identify hidden coronary artery disease in certain patients. Elevated lipoprotein(a) levels, found in approximately 20 percent of the population, can heighten the risk of heart disease, heart attacks, and strokes.

Healthcare professionals also encouraged the public to monitor their blood pressure, blood sugar, weight, cholesterol levels, and to maintain a healthy lifestyle through diet and exercise. GPHC nutritionist Djmilsa Lambert recommended incorporating local fruits and vegetables, whole grains, fish, lentils, lean chicken, and healthier oils into a heart-friendly diet. Dr. Vishwa Mahadeo, Director General of the Ministry of Health, highlighted the need for prevention messages to reach all regions of Guyana and mentioned ongoing efforts to enhance regional health infrastructure and human resources. The symposium included presentations on various topics related to heart health, including chest pain, echocardiograms, atrial fibrillation, mitral regurgitation, and premature coronary disease.
