Guyana: Yarrowkabra Primary School Annex Commissioned

The Ministry of Education has officially commissioned a newly constructed G$177 million classroom wing at the Yarrowkabra Primary School. This development aims to address overcrowding issues at the Grade C institution, which has seen its enrollment nearly double due to changing community demographics.

The original facility, located along the Soesdyke-Linden Highway, was designed to accommodate 250 students. However, current enrollment figures indicate that there are now 415 pupils enrolled, supported by a staff of 21 educators. The expansion was inaugurated by Minister of Education Sonia Parag, who highlighted the importance of providing opportunities for children.

Minister Parag stated, “What this represents is an opportunity that is presented to these children. Building a wing in a school is ensuring that we continue in the path of progress; it is ensuring that our children are taken care of.” She emphasized the difference between having opportunities and having access to them.

The new classroom wing includes eight modern classrooms designed to accommodate approximately 200 senior pupils from Grades Four through Six. Additionally, the facility features a student canteen, centralized administrative offices, a music program, and a specialized room for Special Education Needs and Disabilities (SEND) to ensure inclusive learning.

Although the facility was officially opened on Tuesday, it has been in use since March to support the academic year. Regional Executive Officer for Region 4, Juan Edghill Jr., framed the upgrade as part of a broader initiative for people-centered resource transformation in Guyana. He remarked that education is a powerful tool for creating opportunities.

To enhance learning, plans have been finalized to install a localized Starlink high-speed satellite internet system, providing students with access to online educational resources comparable to those available in urban areas.
