Guyana: Venezuela’s interim President welcomes Ali’s offer of earthquake relief

Venezuela’s interim President Delcy Rodriguez expressed her appreciation for the support offered by Guyana’s President Irfaan Ali in the wake of the recent earthquakes that struck Venezuela. In a statement made on X, formerly known as Twitter, Rodriguez highlighted Ali’s willingness to assist the Venezuelan people during this challenging period.

Rodriguez stated, “His message conveys solidarity, respect, and a sense of neighborliness toward Venezuelans.” The earthquakes, which occurred on Wednesday, have resulted in a rising death toll of 164 individuals, with 971 reported injuries. The seismic events have caused significant destruction, leading to the collapse of numerous buildings and extensive damage across the region, marking it as the most severe quake Venezuela has experienced since 1900.

Despite her previous criticisms of Ali and the Guyana government regarding Venezuela’s territorial claims over the Essequibo Region, Rodriguez has moderated her tone following the recent political changes in Venezuela. Since the United States’ removal of President Nicolas Maduro on January 3, 2026, she has adopted a more conciliatory approach towards Guyana, the United States, and ExxonMobil, while still maintaining Venezuela’s claims to the disputed territory.

In addition to Guyana, other nations such as Cuba, Trinidad and Tobago, and Barbados have also extended offers of assistance to Venezuela in response to the disaster.
