The United States Navy and the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) are currently engaged in joint security exercises that include the deployment of the USS Nimitz, an aircraft carrier, as part of the Southern Seas 2026 initiative. This collaboration aims to strengthen alliances and enhance capabilities to address regional security challenges.
According to a statement from the US Embassy in Guyana, the USS Nimitz is conducting exercises alongside the GDF. US Ambassador to Guyana, Nicole Theriot, emphasized the shared commitment between the United States and Guyana towards regional security and prosperity. She noted that the visit of the USS Nimitz signifies the dedication to working collaboratively with Guyana and Caribbean partners to tackle common challenges.
President Irfaan Ali, who visited the USS Nimitz alongside Ambassador Theriot, expressed his honor in joining the crew aboard the vessel. He highlighted the importance of partnership and friendship in ensuring a peaceful and democratic region, reflecting the shared values of the Shield of the Americas coalition.
During the visit, President Ali acknowledged the military precision and commitment of the USS Nimitz crew and expressed pride in meeting four Guyanese personnel serving on the ship. The delegation included several government officials and security officers who toured the vessel, which accommodates over 4,000 crew members.
The US Embassy also mentioned that the security partnership between the US and Guyana extends beyond military exercises. Under the ship-rider agreement, Guyanese law enforcement officers are allowed to join US law enforcement vessels to assist in counter-drug operations and pursue drug traffickers in Guyanese waters.
The USS Nimitz is known for operating advanced aircraft and has since traveled to Suriname for similar engagements. The embassy reiterated that the USS Nimitz symbolizes American naval excellence and the commitment to regional security and cooperation, with Guyana’s role as a founding member of the Shield of the Americas Coalition underscoring the shared commitment to hemispheric security.
Lieutenant Commander Clint Venture, a Guyanese naval officer who previously served on the Nimitz, also participated in the VIP visit, contributing to the planning and execution of bilateral engagements with partner nations in the Southern Command area.
