Guyana: US Commitment to Regional Security Highlighted by President Ali During USS Nimitz Visit

President Dr. Irfaan Ali has acknowledged the United States’ commitment to regional security during a visit aboard the USS Nimitz, a significant aircraft carrier of the US Navy currently operating in the region. The visit included the Commander-in-Chief, Cabinet ministers, senior military officers, and national security officials, as both Guyana and the United States work to enhance defense cooperation.

The USS Nimitz, which accommodates over 4,000 personnel and features advanced military aircraft, is engaged in exercises with the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) to bolster security collaboration and military readiness. In a social media post, President Ali referred to the United States as a reliable security partner, emphasizing that its support is evident through actions rather than mere words.

“The United States has long been a strong and dependable security partner for Guyana and the wider region. Its commitment to its allies is not expressed through words alone; it is demonstrated through action, partnership, and a sustained presence in support of regional peace and stability,” stated President Ali. He expressed gratitude for the support from the US Government, military, and people in promoting regional security.

A video released captured President Ali’s remarks during the visit, where he praised the US’s role in safeguarding the region. He noted the diversity of the US military, mentioning that three crew members aboard the vessel have Guyanese heritage.

The visit was initiated by US Ambassador to Guyana Nicole Theriot. Following the engagement, the US Embassy highlighted the strengthening defense partnership between Guyana and the United States. Ambassador Theriot stated, “The United States and Guyana share a commitment to regional security and prosperity.”

The USS Nimitz is participating in joint exercises with the GDF under Southern Seas 2026, aimed at enhancing military cooperation and addressing shared security challenges. The embassy also noted Guyana’s involvement in the Shield of the Americas initiative, which focuses on combating narco-trafficking and transnational crimes. Additionally, ongoing cooperation under the Shiprider Agreement allows Guyanese law enforcement to join US vessels in counter-narcotics operations.

Among the Guyanese delegation was Lieutenant Commander Clint Venture, who previously served aboard the USS Nimitz as an international staff officer, assisting in planning and coordination with partner nations across the US Southern Command region.
