Guyana: UG earns ACCA accreditation for Bachelor of Accountancy programme

The University of Guyana’s School of Entrepreneurship and Business Innovation (SEBI) has announced the accreditation of its Bachelor of Accountancy Degree Programme by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA). This accreditation is valid from January 1, 2026, to December 31, 2030, and signifies the quality and international comparability of the university’s accounting education.

This marks the first time the institution has secured formal accreditation for the programme itself, although graduates have previously received ACCA exemptions on an individual basis. The accreditation aligns the university’s academic offerings with international professional standards and enhances its reputation as a leading institution for business education in Guyana.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Paloma Mohamed Martin expressed gratitude to the Head of the Department of Accountancy and Finance, Dr. Alfred Aaron, and Dean of SEBI, Professor Leyland Lucas, for their contributions to this achievement. She noted the ongoing collaboration with local partners and ACCA to develop additional educational products that will benefit students.

Dr. Aaron highlighted that the accreditation confirms the programme meets internationally recognized standards, reflecting the quality of teaching and curriculum design. Graduates from 2026 onwards pursuing the ACCA qualification will be eligible for exemptions from four papers, which will streamline their path to obtaining the professional qualification.

The accreditation is expected to provide significant advantages for both current and future students in accounting and finance-related fields. The successful effort involved collaboration among faculty, administrators, and professional staff, with special thanks to the ACCA Trinidad team for their support.

This achievement is part of the university’s broader commitment to academic excellence and the development of competitive graduates. The School has also recently launched an associate degree and a graduate executive diploma in Oil and Gas Accounting/Taxation/Audit. In 2025, the University of Guyana received institutional accreditation from the National Accreditation Council, further affirming its commitment to maintaining high educational standards.
