Guyana: UG and ACCA Formalize Agreement for Dual Award Pathway in Accounting Education

The University of Guyana (UG) and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to advance a dual award pathway for students in UG’s Bachelor of Science in Accountancy program. The agreement was formalized at UG’s Education Lecture Theatre at the Turkeyen Campus and aims to strengthen collaboration in accounting education and establish a structured framework for curriculum development.

This MOU builds on the existing relationship between the two institutions, following UG’s recent ACCA accreditation of its Bachelor of Accountancy program, which secured exemptions for four ACCA papers and confirmed alignment with international standards. The new agreement focuses on developing an enhanced academic and professional pathway, including a dual award structure.

Minister of Education Sonia Parag highlighted the significance of this development, stating that it represents a major advancement in professional education in Guyana. She noted that students will benefit from a stronger qualification profile, ensuring that UG remains globally competitive. The Minister expressed support for an early rollout of the initiative, suggesting implementation as soon as September.

Vice-Chancellor of UG, Prof. Paloma Mohamed Martin, emphasized that the partnership aligns with national priorities regarding professional certification and workforce development. She mentioned that the agreement is particularly significant due to its potential impact on strengthening professional pathways in accounting and finance.

Dr. Alfred Aaron, Head of the Department of Accountancy and Finance, stated that the MOU marks a new stage in collaboration between UG and ACCA, focusing on curriculum alignment and the dual award pathway. He expressed excitement about the opportunities this partnership presents.

ACCA Global President, Ms. Melanie Proffitt, noted that the agreement reflects a shared commitment to preparing finance professionals for a changing global economy. She highlighted the increasing demand for skilled finance professionals in Guyana, which is experiencing significant growth.

Ms. Paula Marcelle-Irish, Head of ACCA Caribbean, described the MOU as a commitment to expanding opportunities for students and strengthening the accounting profession in Guyana. Prof. Leyland Lucas, Dean of the School of Entrepreneurship and Business Innovation, emphasized the importance of collaboration in expanding academic offerings.

Mr. Ramesh Seebarran, President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Guyana, reaffirmed the Institute’s support for the initiative, while Mr. Harryram Parmesar noted that this development reflects years of effort to strengthen accounting pathways in Guyana. The Bachelor of Accountancy program at UG received ACCA accreditation in June 2026, effective from January 1, 2026, to December 31, 2030.
