Guyana: Two now dead in Cuyuni River boat collision

Two individuals have died following a boat collision that occurred last Thursday in the Cuyuni River near Tapir Landing, according to police reports released on Sunday. The deceased include a 23-year-old Brazilian gold miner named Enzo Mateus Alves De Aviz, who was from Tapir Backdam and Belem City in Para State, Brazil. He succumbed to his injuries on Friday at 10 p.m. at the Georgetown Public Hospital, after being transferred from the Bartica Hospital earlier that day.

The other fatality was identified as 57-year-old Steve Daniels, a boat captain from Kartabo Village along the Lower Mazaruni River. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the incident, which took place around 12:45 PM. According to police statements, Daniels was found motionless, while one of the other occupants of the boat sustained serious injuries. Additionally, other passengers received minor injuries.

The collision involved a 26-foot wooden boat powered by a 200 horsepower outboard engine, which collided with an 18-foot aluminum boat operated by Daniels, which was powered by a 40 HP Yamaha outboard engine. One other individual involved in the incident was treated for minor injuries and subsequently discharged from the hospital.

Authorities have stated that the operator of the 26-foot wooden boat is currently in custody and is assisting with the ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision.
