Guyana: Taxi Driver Claims Years of Abuse from Girlfriend Amid Legal Troubles

A 23-year-old taxi driver in Guyana has reported feeling abandoned by the justice system as he faces potential criminal charges. Yusuf Majeed claims he has endured months of physical abuse and harassment from his 22-year-old girlfriend. His situation gained public attention when a video surfaced online showing his partner physically assaulting him in public.

Majeed stated that he shared the video in an effort to seek legal advice and highlight a pattern of domestic abuse. However, instead of receiving support, he is now facing threats of criminal assault and cybercrime charges. He described the ongoing situation as severely impacting his personal safety and livelihood, noting that his girlfriend has stalked him while he works and escalated minor disagreements into physical confrontations.

After posting the video, Majeed reported that the situation became more volatile. He explained, “I upload a video to get help, to get advice from anybody willing to come forward. Now after I upload the video, she tell me she want to take it off. As I refuse to do so, she start hitting me and going back and forth with it.” Majeed expressed frustration over how local authorities have managed his previous complaints, suggesting they were not taken seriously.

In response to the public outcry regarding Majeed’s case, Dr. Vindhya Persaud, the Minister of Human Services and Social Security, addressed the issue on social media. She emphasized that domestic abuse is a serious crime regardless of the victim’s gender and assured that the law provides equal protection under the Family Violence Act of 2024. Majeed is currently appealing to senior law enforcement for a thorough investigation into his claims and is advocating for equal treatment for male survivors of domestic violence.
