A 23-year-old farmer from Zeelugt New Housing Scheme, East Bank Essequibo, has been charged with murder following the death of a seven-year-old boy. Shaheed Mohamed, who also resides in Providence, East Bank Demerara, appeared in court on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, where he was not required to plead to the indictable offense.
The charge stems from the alleged murder of Adriel Aftab Mohamed. According to police reports, the incident occurred on June 6, when Mr. Mohamed was arrested after he allegedly slit the throat of the young boy and severely injured the boy’s 72-year-old grandmother at their home in Phase 3, Zeelugt New Housing Scheme.
Investigators indicated that a relative discovered the injured grandmother and the boy’s lifeless body at approximately 5:05 a.m. The grandmother was subsequently transported to a nearby hospital, where her condition was reported as stable.
During the investigation, authorities noted that Mr. Mohamed is not related to either the boy or the grandmother, and there was no indication of theft being a motive for the alleged crime. Leonora Magistrate Alisha George remanded Mr. Mohamed to prison, with his next court appearance scheduled for July 20.
