Guyana: Stabroek Market to Be Expanded as Bourda Gets New Complex

The administration of Guyana has announced plans to expand the historic Stabroek Market while completely rebuilding the Bourda Market as part of a major redevelopment initiative for Georgetown’s commercial hubs. Local Government Minister Priya Manickchand stated that technical teams are currently redesigning both projects. The upgrade of Stabroek Market is included in the Georgetown Restoration Initiative, which aims to restore the century-old market while adding new space without altering its historic character.

Minister Manickchand indicated that the restoration and extension of Stabroek Market is expected to be completed within the next five years. Assessments are ongoing to determine the necessary restoration works at Stabroek Market and to find the best way to accommodate additional vendors. In the case of Bourda Market, the government has already conducted two rounds of consultations with vendors to gather input on the redevelopment.

The new Bourda Market facility is anticipated to feature a two-storey design, which will create additional space for vendors and customers. Furthermore, Minister Manickchand announced that the government plans to turn the sod for five new markets in the upcoming week. In addition, 32 contractors have submitted bids for the rehabilitation of the East Ruimveldt Market.

The government has allocated $18 billion this year for the construction and rehabilitation of markets across the country, reflecting a commitment to enhancing commercial infrastructure in Guyana.
