Shaka King has navigated a diverse career path, transitioning from real estate in New York to fashion and now to logistics in Guyana. Her journey is influenced by her family background, with her mother involved in trade, her stepmother as a customs broker, and her father working in logistics and trucking.
Currently, King serves as the Chief Executive Officer of King’s Logistics, a company she has developed with the support of family members and professional staff. Her entry into the logistics industry was not straightforward, which she believes contributes to her success.
King’s initial career was in real estate, where she worked as an agent in New York. This experience provided her with a foundational business education that she has applied in her subsequent ventures. She noted, “What a lot of people don’t know is that I actually come from a real estate background. My very first job was actually as a New York real estate agent.” After her time in real estate, she shifted to the fashion industry, studying business management with a focus on economics at the Fashion Institute of Technology. However, she found that many principles taught were not directly applicable to the unique market conditions in Guyana.
She adapted her knowledge to create a fashion brand called Pieces and Things, blending business discipline with creativity. The transition to logistics was prompted by an opportunity to secure a government contract for the Ministry of Education, which proved to be more financially viable than her fashion endeavors.
This contract laid the groundwork for her logistics operation, which has expanded to include family members and a professional team. King emphasizes the importance of using available resources and relationships to progress in business, advising young entrepreneurs to focus on incremental steps rather than seeking immediate success. Her philosophy reflects her family’s business background and her diverse experiences across various industries.
