Guyana: Severe Storm Causes Damage on Essequibo Coast

A severe storm recently impacted the Essequibo Coast in Guyana, leading to significant damage in the area. Reports indicate that over 120 roofs were damaged due to the storm’s intensity. Additionally, there were injuries reported, including an incident at Riverstown Primary School where a teacher sustained injuries.

Residents also experienced an earth tremor, which was linked to an earthquake that occurred near Trinidad and Tobago and Venezuela. This tremor was felt across various parts of Guyana, adding to the concerns of the local population.

In response to the aftermath of the storm, President Dr. Irfaan Ali visited the Essequibo Coast on Wednesday. During his visit, he received a comprehensive briefing from regional officials and representatives from various agencies regarding the extent of the damage and the ongoing recovery efforts.

The storm has raised concerns among local authorities about the resilience of infrastructure in the region. There is an emphasis on the need for preparedness for future weather events to minimize damage and ensure safety.

Efforts are currently underway to assess the full impact of the storm and to provide assistance to those affected. The government is expected to implement measures to support recovery and improve infrastructure in the region. These measures aim to mitigate the effects of similar incidents in the future, ensuring better preparedness and resilience for the community.
