Guyana: Rising costs of rice production, Govt’s $3B support discussed at Region 5 meeting

Rice farmers in Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice) expressed their concerns regarding the escalating costs associated with rice production during a meeting held on Saturday in Onverwagt. The outreach was hosted by Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha, who discussed the government’s recently announced rice support program, which includes a financial allocation of $3 billion.

Farmers highlighted the challenges they are facing, particularly the rising charges for combine harvesting, increased prices for fertilizers, and low crop yields. These issues have raised questions among the farming community about the effectiveness and adequacy of the government’s financial assistance.

During the meeting, several farmers sought clarification on how the support program would address their immediate financial burdens and improve their overall production capacity. Minister Mustapha acknowledged the farmers’ concerns and emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting the agricultural sector.

He assured attendees that the government is aware of the difficulties faced by rice producers and is working to implement measures that will alleviate some of the financial pressures they are currently experiencing. The discussion aimed to foster dialogue between the government and farmers to ensure that the support provided meets their needs effectively.

Key points discussed included:

  • Rising costs of combine harvesting.
  • Increased prices for fertilizers.
  • Low crop yields affecting profitability.
  • Government’s $3 billion financial support program.
  • Need for effective measures to alleviate financial pressures.

The meeting served as a platform for farmers to voice their concerns and for the government to outline its support initiatives.
