Guyana: Region Two RDC warns delinquent contractors of sanctions

Contractors in Region Two who continue to fall behind on their projects may face various penalties, including removal from approved contractor lists and potential reporting to government agencies. This warning was issued by Regional Executive Officer (REO) Deolall Rooplall during a recent meeting with regional officials and contractors whose projects are significantly delayed.

The meeting took place in the RDC boardroom and included the participation of Deputy Regional Executive Officer Omesh Sasenaryan and senior engineering officers. Rooplall expressed the Regional Democratic Council’s (RDC) concerns regarding ongoing delays that are affecting the delivery of development works throughout the region. He emphasized the importance of contractors maintaining communication with the RDC whenever challenges arise that could impact project timelines.

Currently, 24 contractors are reported to be behind schedule and will receive formal correspondence regarding their performance. The REO mentioned that the RDC plans to pursue liquidated damages against contractors who do not complete their projects within the agreed contractual timeframe. Furthermore, contractors who are in default and have not communicated with the RDC about their delays may be reported to the relevant ministries and agencies.

Rooplall also indicated that contractors with poor performance records risk being removed from the RDC’s approved contractors’ list, which could hinder their ability to secure future contracts with the council. These measures are aimed at strengthening accountability, enhancing the delivery of public projects, and ensuring that taxpayers receive value from regional investments.
