Guyana: Randy Jagdeo Surrenders in AK-47 Investigation

City businessman Randy Jagdeo surrendered to the Guyana Police Force on Sunday morning, following a police announcement that he was wanted in connection with an investigation into the seizure of twenty-three AK-47 assault rifles and more than 500 rounds of matching ammunition. Deputy Police Commissioner Wendell Blanhum, who heads the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), confirmed that Mr. Jagdeo, 40, arrived at CID Headquarters accompanied by his attorney and is currently in police custody.

In addition to Mr. Jagdeo, police have issued a wanted bulletin for Orlando Gabriel, who is also being sought for unlawful possession of firearms. The alleged offenses are reported to have occurred at Schoonard, located on the West Bank of Demerara. The police stated that the 23 AK-47 rifles and 503 rounds of ammunition were seized from a vehicle in Schoonard.

According to Deputy Commissioner Blanhum, the rifles seized on Thursday night were manufactured in the United States. He noted that while the serial number on one of the weapons was intact, the serial numbers on the others had been obliterated. A Venezuelan national, identified as Jonathan Gans, 28, from Third Street, Grove, East Bank Demerara, has already been arrested in connection with this arms and ammunition seizure.

Furthermore, three Guyanese individuals are currently facing legal proceedings regarding ten AK-47 rifles that were confiscated last month in Berbice. As of now, top security officials in Guyana have not commented on the potential motives behind the recent increase in the availability of assault rifles in the country.
