Guyana: President Leaves Questions on Consultations with Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed

President Irfaan Ali has not specified when he will consult with the new Opposition Leader, Azruddin Mohamed, regarding several significant constitutional appointments. These appointments include the substantive Chancellor, Chief Justice, and members of the Police Service Commission.

During a recent interview with reporters, President Ali was questioned about the timing of these consultations. He acknowledged the importance of the Opposition Leader’s role in discussions and nominations for constitutionally mandated bodies but did not provide a direct answer regarding when these discussions would occur.

Ali mentioned that the government had already communicated its position on the appointments of the Chancellor and Chief Justice. He stated, “As you’re aware, I’d already expressed the government’s intentions in proposing the appointment of Chancellor and the Chief Justice.” When asked if this position would be shared with the new Opposition Leader, he referred to the situation as a “grey area” due to the continuity of government following an election.

He explained, “This is a grey area that we have to navigate here,” emphasizing that the government’s recommendation for the Chancellor and Chief Justice remains unchanged. Ali reiterated that the government continued its operations after winning the election, maintaining that their recommendations are based on constitutional guidelines.

When pressed again about engaging with the new Opposition Leader, Ali did not provide a specific timeline. Regarding the Police Service Commission, he noted that two members had passed away and that the Parliament’s Appointments Committee had only recently been established.

Ali affirmed his commitment to fulfilling his constitutional responsibilities, stating, “As a President who strongly believes in democracy and the rule of law, governing and keeping with the Constitution, you can expect, and I will uphold the requirements of the Constitution.” The President’s remarks leave the timing of formal consultations with the Opposition Leader uncertain.
