Guyana: Political Tensions Rise in Guyana Over Farmland Dispute

In Guyana, a political dispute has escalated between President Irfaan Ali and the prominent Mohamed family, focusing on allegations of corruption and blackmail related to a 150-acre agricultural estate on the Soesdyke-Linden Highway. The controversy began when Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed released a video accusing President Ali of misusing over $2.2 billion in state resources for personal gain. President Ali has denied these allegations, labeling them as fabricated.

In a counter-accusation, President Ali claimed to have received threatening communications from the Mohamed family, who are under U.S. sanctions and facing federal indictments. He stated that these messages warned him that damaging information about his private farm would be leaked unless his administration took steps to protect the family from extradition requests from U.S. authorities. The President mentioned that a specific ultimatum was sent to him by Nazar “Shell” Mohamed, the family patriarch.

President Ali expressed his willingness to release the full digital trail of the messages to the public, asserting that his administration would not succumb to pressure or blackmail. He provided a detailed defense of the legal and financial history of the highway property, stating that it was acquired before his presidency, funded through private loans, and had never received state subsidies. He also noted that all assets had been declared to the Integrity Commission as required by law.

Nazar Mohamed responded by denying the blackmail claims and challenging President Ali to publish their communications. He insisted that his messages contained no threats or references to the family’s legal issues. Mohamed stated that he had nothing to hide and invited the President to make the correspondence public for public scrutiny.

The ongoing feud has heightened tensions between the government and the Mohamed family, with both sides urging each other to disclose the relevant communications, leaving the public awaiting further developments in this political standoff.
