Guyana: Police Sergeant Charged With Attempted Murder, Remanded To Prison

Police Sergeant David Lall has been charged with attempted murder in connection with a shooting incident that occurred on April 12, 2026, at Chanta Creek, Guyana. The incident involved Carlos Trotman, a local resort owner, who sustained severe injuries that led to the amputation of his leg. Lall was arraigned at the Friendship Magistrates’ Court and is currently remanded to prison.

During the court proceedings, Lall faced a primary charge of Attempted Murder and an additional charge of Discharging a Loaded Firearm with Intent to Maim, Disfigure, Disable, or Cause Grievous Bodily Harm. The altercation reportedly began when Lall, who claimed to be off-duty and socializing with family, became involved in a confrontation with a group of men at Trotman’s resort.

Lall alleged that he was attacked by an individual wielding a cutlass, prompting him to draw his service pistol and fire a single shot. The bullet struck Trotman, who was subsequently transported to the Linden Hospital Complex for emergency treatment. Trotman and his attorney have disputed Lall’s self-defense claims, suggesting that the conflict escalated due to Lall’s behavior and that he threatened Trotman before the shooting occurred.

Trotman has accused Lall of deliberately targeting him after the initial confrontation and claims that Lall fired multiple shots, resulting in severe injuries. The legal proceedings have highlighted concerns regarding the use of a state-issued weapon and potential bias in the response from fellow officers.

During the arraignment, Lall’s defense attorney requested bail, but the application was denied by Magistrate Tamika Clarke, who cited the severity of the injuries and the circumstances surrounding the case. Lall is scheduled to remain in custody until July 8, 2026, for further legal proceedings. Additionally, Lall’s wife has been charged with misdemeanor assault related to the initial incident and has been granted bail, with a return date set for the same day as her husband.
