Guyana: Police Investigate Fatal Three-Vehicle Collision in Providence

On Saturday afternoon, a three-vehicle collision occurred along the Providence Public Road, East Bank Demerara, resulting in one fatality and several injuries. The incident took place around 5:00 p.m., transforming a busy roadway into a scene of emergency response and debris.

According to police reports, the collision involved a minibus identified as BAH 9443, which was traveling northbound. A motor lorry, GAF 1093, was also heading in the same direction when it allegedly made a sudden right turn into the path of the minibus. This action caused the minibus to collide with the side of the lorry, subsequently mounting the median and veering into the opposite lane.

The minibus then overturned and struck a motor car, PJJ 1664, which was traveling in the opposite direction. The crash resulted in injuries to both passengers and drivers involved. Emergency responders arrived promptly at the scene to assist those injured.

The deceased has been identified as 36-year-old Ruddy Raymond, a resident of Lima, Essequibo Coast, who was pronounced dead by a doctor at the scene. Several others, including the drivers of the minibus and motor car, sustained injuries and were transported to the Diamond Regional Hospital for medical treatment.

As part of the investigation, police conducted breathalyzer tests on the lorry driver, which returned readings of 0.003% and 0.004%. The driver has been taken into custody as inquiries continue. This incident raises ongoing concerns regarding road safety and the frequency of serious accidents on Guyana’s roadways, particularly on heavily trafficked routes like the East Bank Demerara highway.

Authorities are actively working to determine the full circumstances surrounding the collision as the investigation progresses.
