Guyana: Police Investigate Death of 16-Year-Old Motorcyclist Amid Protests in Corentyne

The Guyana Police Force has announced an investigation into the death of a 16-year-old motorcyclist, Aftaz King, who died on Thursday evening in Corentyne, Berbice. The incident occurred around 6:45 PM on Princeton Access Road, where King was reportedly riding motorcycle #CL 5607. According to police statements, he attempted to evade a police patrol, lost control of the motorcycle, and collided with a utility pole.

This account contrasts with claims made by the opposition party, We Invest in Nationhood (WIN), which alleges that police officers struck King with their vehicle. The party has called for justice, stating, “Justice for young Altaf that was purposely hit by Police Officer in Corriverton.” In response to the situation, the opposition coalition, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), led by the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR), has demanded a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding King’s death.

Following these calls, the Guyana Police Force’s Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) has begun an immediate investigation to examine all aspects of the incident. The police have stated that the investigation will determine if there was any criminal or disciplinary culpability involved.

King was transported to the No. 75 Regional Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The police have acknowledged the seriousness of the incident and assured the public and King’s family that appropriate actions will be taken if any wrongdoing is established.

The PNCR-APNU has expressed deep concern regarding the reports of police pursuit and has called for an independent and transparent investigation. They have requested the preservation of all relevant evidence, including police records and any available video footage. The coalition has emphasized the need for timely public disclosure of the investigation’s findings to ensure accountability and maintain public confidence.

They have also expressed solidarity with King’s family in their quest for truth and justice, stating that no family should endure the loss of a child under such circumstances without clear answers.
