PNCR Leader Aubrey Norton has stated that he does not plan to run as the coalition’s presidential candidate for the 2030 General and Regional Elections. However, he has indicated that he may still play a significant role in the rebuilding and stabilization of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR). In an appearance on KAMS TV’s morning show with host Kadakie Amsterdam, Norton emphasized that the party is currently in a phase that necessitates consolidation, preparation, and internal strengthening following recent political challenges.
Norton clarified that the leadership of the PNCR and the selection of a future presidential candidate are distinct issues. He mentioned that the party’s leadership will ultimately be decided by its members during congress, but he remains open to providing guidance if the membership deems it necessary. He expressed that the PNCR requires a “steady hand” while younger leaders are being developed for future national leadership roles.
He has not endorsed anyone to succeed him and believes that succession should not focus on selecting a single individual. Instead, he advocates for creating opportunities for a diverse group of younger leaders to emerge. Norton pointed out that Guyana’s political landscape demands leaders who can engage younger voters, while also stressing the importance of balancing renewal with experience and institutional knowledge.
Addressing recent defections from the opposition, Norton dismissed claims that these departures signify the collapse of the PNCR or the broader APNU coalition. He argued that many who left were drawn by access to state resources under the PPP/C administration rather than strong political beliefs. He noted that several individuals who departed entered politics during the coalition’s governance and lacked a deep connection to the PNCR’s history and organizational culture.
In response to calls for him to step down, Norton stated that he became leader through a competitive internal process and asserted that any leadership changes must occur through the party’s democratic structures. He emphasized that the PNCR should not allow external pressures or public campaigns to dictate its leadership. Norton also cautioned against factionalism and indiscipline within the party, asserting that internal elections should serve to strengthen the organization rather than create further divisions.
He reiterated the importance of advancing younger members while also valuing the contributions and experiences of long-standing supporters. Regarding future coalition discussions, Norton mentioned that any collaboration with other opposition groups must be founded on shared principles, discipline, and a genuine commitment to enhancing the lives of Guyanese citizens. He stressed that political cooperation should not be motivated by personal ambitions or short-term conveniences.
