Guyana: MP Duncan Raises Concerns Over Development Projects in Moruca

APNU Member of Parliament Sherod Duncan has expressed concerns regarding more than 30 development projects in Moruca, following a recent visit to several hinterland communities. During the tour, which included MP Vinceroy Hansel Jordan, activist Angela McDonald, and local representatives, residents reported issues with stalled, poorly functioning, or abandoned initiatives that were funded through public resources.

The projects in question encompass various sectors, including agriculture, education, and small business ventures. Specific initiatives mentioned include shade houses, cassava and agro-processing facilities, sewing centers, and community infrastructure works across villages such as Ko-Ko, Karaburi, and Haimaruni. Additionally, residents raised concerns about particular projects in Kamwatta and Karaburi, such as a ball field, a tilapia pond, a bakery and chicken farm, and a Black Hassa Pond initiative valued at approximately G$10 million.

Duncan noted that many of these projects were designed to generate income, enhance food security, and create employment opportunities. However, he stated that they are now either non-functional or underutilized. He also highlighted issues regarding uneven access to electricity infrastructure, particularly in Karaburi, where some areas have limited power supply while others remain underserved.

“These projects represent millions of taxpayer dollars and countless promises made to hinterland communities,” Duncan remarked, suggesting that the situation reflects broader issues of planning and oversight. He emphasized that residents are not seeking preferential treatment but are calling for basic functionality and accountability in the implementation of development initiatives.

Duncan announced plans to compile a comprehensive report documenting what he described as over 30 failing or failed projects identified during the visit. This report is expected to be submitted to relevant government ministries and agencies, with requests for answers regarding implementation and oversight. As of now, the government has not publicly responded to the specific claims raised during the visit, and the allegations have not been independently verified. No official assessment of the cited projects has been released.
