Guyana: Moruca Businessman Dies in Boat Mishap, Nephew Hospitalized

A businessman and boat captain from Kumaka Waterfront, Moruca, North West District, has died following a boating accident at the mouth of the Moruca River, according to police reports. The deceased has been identified as 55-year-old John “Johnny” Henry. His nephew, who has not been named, has been hospitalized due to injuries sustained in the incident.

Initial investigations by the police indicate that Henry and his nephew departed from Kumaka on Friday in a blue and white wooden shed boat, which was powered by a 225 HP Yamaha outboard engine. They were traveling to Charity, Essequibo, to purchase supplies.

At approximately 3:40 PM, after completing their purchases, they began their return journey to Moruca with the boat loaded with goods. While navigating the Moruca River Mouth, it is reported that Henry lost control of the vessel, leading to a collision with a large tree limb that was overhanging the southern side of the river.

The collision resulted in extensive damage to the boat and injuries to both Henry and his nephew. Following the accident, they were transported to the Kumaka District Hospital for medical attention. Unfortunately, Henry succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead by a doctor on duty at the hospital.

Currently, Henry’s body is at the Moruca District Hospital Mortuary, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.
