Guyana: Missing Cuban Woman Found Dead, Police Constable Arrested As Murder Probe Begins

A search for a missing 26-year-old Cuban national, Dailen Paneque Gómez, has concluded with the discovery of her remains along the East Coast of Demerara. The case, which began as a missing person investigation, has escalated into a homicide inquiry following the recovery of her decomposed body and the arrest of a police constable.

The body was found concealed in bushes in the Enmore Backdam area on Wednesday evening, six days after she was reported missing. The investigation led to the arrest of 20-year-old Police Constable Randy Thomas, who had a personal relationship with Gómez.

During interrogation, Constable Thomas provided a detailed confession regarding the circumstances surrounding her death. He stated that he had planned the encounter on June 18, the day Gómez was reported missing. According to his confession, he purchased industrial rope earlier that day and arranged a meeting with Gómez in Enmore, where he drove her to a remote area.

Thomas claimed that an argument ensued during their discussion, which escalated into violence. He stated that he used an unlicensed firearm to shoot Gómez, resulting in her death. Following the incident, he allegedly bound her body with the rope and concealed it in the bushes.

In an effort to eliminate evidence, Thomas admitted to discarding the firearm and other items related to the crime along his escape route. The investigation is ongoing, with crime scene technicians searching for the discarded items to support the evidence against him.

The murder has raised concerns within the local community, particularly among the Cuban diaspora in Guyana, who had previously called for a thorough investigation into Gómez’s disappearance. The case is being expedited to the Director of Public Prosecutions for further legal action.
