Guyana: Minister Vows Transparent Investigation After Death of 16-Year-Old Altaf King

Tensions were reported in Skeldon following the death of 16-year-old Altaf King, prompting local residents to express their grief and anger. In response to the incident, Minister of Home Affairs Oneidge Walrond has called for calm and assured the public that a full investigation will be conducted into the circumstances surrounding the teenager’s death.

In a statement, Minister Walrond extended her condolences to the family and friends of Altaf King, stating, “I extend my deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of 16-year-old Altaf King. My thoughts and prayers are with them during this time of profound grief.” She emphasized the importance of a thorough, impartial, and transparent investigation, noting that every aspect of the incident will be carefully examined.

Walrond also indicated that if any wrongdoing is identified, appropriate actions will be taken. “If any criminal or disciplinary culpability is established, it will be dealt with swiftly and in accordance with the law. No one is above accountability,” she stated.

As emotions remain heightened in the community, the minister urged residents of Skeldon and nearby areas to maintain calm and allow the investigation to proceed without interference. “I also appeal to the residents of Skeldon and the surrounding communities to remain calm, refrain from actions that may endanger lives and allow the investigative process to proceed without interference,” she added.

Walrond acknowledged the grief and concern being expressed in the community, emphasizing the need for the truth to be established through a comprehensive and independent investigation.
