The Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development in Guyana has successfully reconnected the villages of La Grange and Bagotville by commissioning a newly constructed pedestrian bridge. This initiative aims to fulfill a community development promise made by the ministry.
On Monday, Minister Priya Manickchand visited the West Bank of Demerara to officially open the bridge, which has ended months of transit disruption for local residents and school-age children. The new structure links Unity Street in La Grange directly to Inner Bagotville.
The commissioning ceremony was attended by Surendra Khayyam, the Regional Executive Officer for Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara), and the Regional Engineer who oversaw the project. Minister Manickchand recalled a promise made to a local resident during a community walkabout last year, where residents expressed concerns about the deteriorating infrastructure that had isolated the two neighborhoods.
The old infrastructure had forced residents, including market vendors and elderly citizens, to take long detours to access transportation, health facilities, and schools. The new bridge is designed as a light-transit timber and composite steel structure, measuring 63 feet in length and 4 feet in width, allowing for safe pedestrian flow and small cart logistics.
Minister Manickchand highlighted the importance of the bridge in fostering community connections, stating, “This is literally a bridge from Bagotville to La Grange, and from La Grange to Bagotville, so that our people can continue to be good neighbors and seamlessly enjoy the services of each other.”
The rapid construction of the bridge addresses urgent safety and economic needs for local residents. This project aligns with the Ministry’s 2026 mandate to enhance neighborhood pathways and ensure essential infrastructure is accessible to citizens.
