The Guyana government has officially launched its digital ID card system, marking a significant step toward modernizing public services and national data management.
Prime Minister Mark Phillips announced that the system is now active, with infrastructure already in place to support registration and data management. Officials say the initiative will improve service delivery, enhance security, and streamline access to government services.
The government has emphasized that data protection remains a priority, noting that safeguards are being strengthened ahead of full implementation of data protection laws.
However, concerns have been raised by opposition groups and civil society over privacy risks, particularly in the absence of fully enacted data protection legislation.
