Guyana: Knife, Clothing and Digital Evidence Recovered in Connection with Child’s Death

Police in Guyana have reported the recovery of a knife, clothing, and digital evidence as part of their investigation into the death of seven-year-old Adriel Aftab Mohamed in Zeelugt, East Bank Essequibo. A 23-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the case.

Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum confirmed to various media outlets that the suspect confessed to the crime after detectives presented him with what they described as compelling digital evidence that placed him at the victim’s home during the time of the attack. The suspect reportedly could not deny his presence at the location and subsequently admitted to investigators what occurred after he entered the residence.

As part of the investigation, police recovered a knife from the crime scene, which the suspect identified as the weapon used in the attack that resulted in the child’s death and injuries to his 72-year-old great-grandmother, Halima Itwari. Additionally, clothing believed to have been worn by the suspect during the incident has also been collected and is expected to undergo forensic analysis.

Further investigation revealed evidence linking the suspect to another property in the vicinity shortly before the attack. When confronted with additional digital evidence, the suspect admitted to having entered a nearby yard but left after hearing noises inside the house. He reportedly fled that location, leaving behind a pair of slippers and a music player, which were later recovered and identified by him.

Detectives also learned that the suspect reported to work on the morning of the murder with a visible injury to his hand. His employer informed investigators that this injury was not present when he left work the previous day. The suspect reportedly acknowledged that the cut was sustained during the attack.

The murder occurred in the early hours of Friday at the Phase Three, Zeelugt New Housing Scheme. Adriel was found deceased inside the home, while his great-grandmother was injured and taken to the hospital, where she remains a patient. Police continue to investigate as they work to finalize the case file and await forensic examination results of the recovered evidence.
