More than 1,000 local government officials across Guyana are expected to begin receiving increased monthly stipends within days. This follows government approval for higher payments to representatives of Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDC) and Regional Democratic Councils (RDC). The announcement was made by Local Government and Regional Development Minister Priya Manickchand.
The adjustments will benefit NDC councillors, chairpersons, and vice-chairpersons, as well as RDC councillors throughout the country. According to the minister, the enhanced payments have received the necessary approvals and will soon be distributed to councils and individual office holders.
Under the revised payment structure, NDC chairpersons will now receive $50,000 per month, an increase from the previous $10,000. Vice-chairpersons will see their stipends rise from $5,000 to $40,000. NDC councillors will have their monthly stipends increased from $3,000 to $30,000, while RDC councillors will see their payments move from $30,000 to $50,000.
Manickchand stated that these increases are part of efforts to strengthen local democratic bodies and provide greater support to those serving at the community level. The intention is that with enhanced support, councillors and other office holders will be better positioned to serve residents and contribute more effectively to local government operations.
The minister also noted that this initiative reflects the government’s broader efforts to improve the functioning of local democratic organs, ensuring they are better equipped to respond to community needs. The increased stipends were highlighted in the 2026 national budget and are expected to benefit officials serving in NDCs and RDCs nationwide.
